What a Girl Wants

Jewelry. Chocolate. Couture. Biosolids?

Last week we celebrated Dirt Day, a close second to Dumpster Day in our annual work-related revelries. Every spring we borrow my parents’ truck and get a big old scoop or two of compost, drive it home, shovel it out, and till it in the gardens. This is usually all sorts of exciting for me. I look forward to it. I save my tutoring money for it. I plan dates with the boys so they can come with me and watch the tractors.

(I know, Scotty and T are totally stylin'. More on that in a future post)

But if I’m being honest, this year Dirt Day made me sort of tired. It’s a fat lot of work, and I still need to cut out the grass edges, clear a new bed for foundation plants on the north side of the house, weed a lot, and all this before it’s time to get the annuals in. Don’t get me wrong—I love working in the yard. It makes me happy. But I’m just saying, in return for all the sweat-blood-and-tears, there are a few things I’d like in return.

Such as . . .
  1. A bouquet of roses for my kitchen table. With stems long enough to merit a real vase, in colors combinations that don’t make my gums wince. This year’s additions to the rose garden (pictured under burlap) I’ve affectionately named Gene (a Peace Rose) and Lucy (First Prize).
  2. Honeysuckle. To cover the world’s ugliest wall. Preferably vigorous enough that I can smell the flowers from my kitchen window.
  3. Virginia Creeper. To help the honeysuckle cover the world’s ugliest wall. Yes, I know most people try to get rid of this stuff. I bought it last year, then nearly killed it with attention. Sometimes I hover; ask Wade.

Three simple things. Is that so much to ask?

  1. Strength and energy to finish cutting out the grass along my sidewalk and dumping truckloads of compost into my beds.

  3. That all these crazy concoctions I'm using on my lawn will actually work. So far, not so good. All the other lawns in the neighborhood have sprinted ahead of my still awaking, yellowish lawn.

  4. Numero uno? Lose weight. I need to jump on your bandwagon. And I LOVE honeysuckle. It smells wonderfully. And I've been cursing your name ever since you brought over that bread and cheese spread. We loved it so much, we bought the Costco size package of the cheese as well as the bread. Looks like the pregnancy weight won't be coming off any time soon.
